WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, the Trump administration dropped two appeals defending a rule that would have restricted which employers qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
Jaylon Herbin, director of federal campaigns at the Center for Responsible Lending, made the following statement:
The rule of law matters, and so does keeping promises to borrowers. Congress created PSLF to ensure that people who dedicate their careers to public service can earn relief—regardless of political inclinations. Abandoning this effort to restrict PSLF protects that promise and restores a critical pathway to relief for millions of borrowers of color who disproportionately shoulder our nation’s student debt burden. Public servants who uphold their end of the bargain deserve the relief they were promised.
Additional Background
Congress established PSLF through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, which passed with wide bipartisan support. Under PSLF, eligible borrowers can have the remaining balance on their Direct Loans forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full time for a qualifying government or nonprofit employer.
