WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. Vice-President Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first woman and the first Black and first South Asian American to ever hold the office.

President of the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) Mike Calhoun made the following statement:

Congratulations to President Biden and Vice President Harris who took the sacred oath to lead our nation. Today, our leaders promised the American people a message of hope and unity, offering the opportunity to move closer toward the promises of America for all. Today, the first Black and first South Asian American woman became Vice President of the United States.

We are hopeful that the new Administration will create a more inclusive economy that centers racial justice and creates economic opportunity for underserved communities, including Black and brown families hardest hit by COVID-19. We look forward to working with the new Administration and Congress to implement reforms that address systemic racism and will help to grow the economy as millions of families continue to need relief.

We believe today’s executive orders are necessary for our healing nation. We are encouraged that on his first day in office, President Biden is taking immediate steps to address critical issues such as an extension of nationwide restrictions on evictions and foreclosures, which will prevent millions of Americans from being kicked out of their homes during the ongoing health pandemic.

We are also pleased that the President is extending the student loan payment suspension. This is a critical first step to help millions of struggling Americans, and we hope that the Administration will consider across-the-board cancellation, which can provide families a path to equity and financial advancement.

All Americans deserve ladders of opportunity to create and sustain economic prosperity—not just a select few. We look forward to continuing to work with the Biden-Harris team on these and many other challenges.
