Washington, D.C. – The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) strongly condemns the acts of violence seen today at the U.S. Capitol Building during the improper Congressional attempts to overturn the state-certified electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Harris.

CRL President Mike Calhoun released the following statement:

There should be no place for today’s events in an organized democracy such as ours. We pray for the future of our nation, the safety of our citizens and lawmakers, and the preservation of our democracy. We call for a peaceful transfer of power as a civilized nation protected by the U.S. Constitution. This is a dangerous and unprecedented moment in our nation’s history. Steps should be taken immediately to prevent President Trump from further actions to disrupt this peaceful transfer or otherwise abuse presidential powers. The extremists who caused harm in this insurrection must be held responsible for their actions.

The new Administration and Congress must prepare to move forward with long overdue reforms. Americans have cast their votes for a legislative and administrative agenda that is more inclusive of economically vulnerable communities, especially Black and brown Americans, low-wage workers, and other families hardest hit by COVID-19. Reform is needed on many fronts as we move beyond bitter and divisive politics and build a more perfect union.
