WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the wake of the U.S. Capitol insurrection, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) is calling for the immediate removal of Donald J. Trump from the office of the Presidency.

Michael D. Calhoun, President of CRL, issued the following statement:

In the days since a riotous mob of Trump supporters violently overran police and desecrated the U.S. Capitol, America’s symbol of democracy, the facts undoubtedly leave the president complicit in inciting the mob to stop the constitutionally mandated certification of the Electoral College vote count — inflamed by weeks of repeated, groundless claims of stolen elections.

This violent attack — one of the worst on our seat of government — led to the defiling of the U.S. Capitol with hateful, extremist symbols that are racist and anti-Semitic. We hold these truths to be self-evident that this failed coup d’état was grounded in centuries of white supremacy and privilege; Mr. Trump incited people who saw it as their duty and right to take back what they considered to be exclusively theirs. Such actions perpetrated upon our government, elected officials, public servants, and citizens are unconscionable and treasonous, and all actors — including Mr. Trump — must be held legally accountable for their role in the insurrection.

Mr. Trump should not be permitted to serve out the rest of his term. Instead, on a bipartisan basis, he should be removed from office, as an unequivocal statement that such conduct is seditious, is illegal, violates the Constitution, and will not be tolerated.
