WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Vanita Gupta to be Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Gupta is the first woman of color to hold the position.

Center for Responsible Lending President Michael Calhoun issued the following statement:

Vanita Gupta is an accomplished advocate and litigator who has led the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Barack Obama. Her history of public service and proven track record of fighting for civil rights and economic fairness is second to none. Ms. Gupta has devoted her career to civil rights work, from her work on criminal justice reform to prosecuting hate crimes and human trafficking, protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, promoting disability rights, and combating discrimination in education and housing.

At DOJ and the Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights, Ms. Gupta held predatory lenders accountable for violating the rights of economically marginalized people and communities. She was also critical in convincing large banks and industry actors to preserve important fair lending rules to ensure that Black and brown families have access to homeownership’s wealth building opportunities.

We look forward to working with Ms. Gupta. CRL is confident in her ability to serve the Justice Department and our country in this top leadership capacity, and to ensure justice and fairness for all.
