Director of Faith Affairs

Location: Durham, NC

The Center for Responsible Lending is seeking a Director of Faith Affairs to join our team in Durham, NC. The Director of Faith Affairs will serve as the lead CRL staff member managing issue education, communication, and mobilization to the Faith-Based community to advance policy and legislative goals at the federal and state levels that eliminate abusive financial products and practices.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain ally relationships within the faith-based community and mobilize faith-based leaders and advocates to promote responsible lending practices.
  • Provide technical assistance to faith-based leaders, faith advocacy organizations, faith-based coalitions, and public policy leaders working on responsible lending issues.
  • Serve as an internal expert on organizing within faith communities by monitoring, compiling and tracking relevant issues impacting faith communities and disseminating this information within CRL to help effectively execute policy campaigns.
  • Work in collaboration with CRL colleagues on issue campaigns that advance CRL policy priorities, programs, and activities.
  • Create and maintain diverse coalitions within the faith-based community with an aim of eliminating abusive financial practices.
  • Represent CRL before policy makers and those who promulgate rules and regulations at the state and national levels.
  • Organize forums, town halls, and press events elevating the voice of faith leaders’ advocacy in opposition to abusive lending practices.
  • Brand and market the Center for Responsible Lending to be recognized within the faith community as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, advocacy organization dedicated to ending abusive lending practices by promoting legislative reforms.
  • Conduct grass tops, grassroots, and community education around abusive lending practices and their negative impact on American families and create strategies and tactics as part of issue campaigns designed to end abusive lending.
  • Participate in national team of outreach and policy professionals in building support for state and federal legislative and regulatory policy change.
  • Develop, disseminate and present educational materials that effectively communicate complex legal and financial information and build support within the faith community.
  • Professionally represent CRL at speaking engagements, conferences, and community events.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience in policy issue campaigns. Candidates must have existing relationships within the faith community.
  • 5 years’ experience in issue education and campaigns, external relations, governmental affairs or communications.
  • Direct experience in government or in nongovernmental organizations working to influence government policy.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, quickly and persuasively and be able to translate complex legal and financial language into formats understandable to people with limited knowledge of financial issues.
  • Self-starter, able to initiate and juggle multiple projects and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice mission and to working as part of a diverse organization.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a faced paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail and ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to form and maintain trusting relationships and exercise discretion with internal/external partners and social constituents.
  • Ability to effectively present information both orally and in writing and to appropriately and skillfully respond to questions from groups and/or individuals.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Social Media required.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of time to external events.

Desired Qualifications

  • Major in political science, public policy administration, law or business preferred. Graduate degree in law, public policy or business is a plus.
  • Experience working with financial issues a plus.
  • English/Spanish fluency highly desired.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 40 pounds.
