State Sues Foreclosure Consultants

Louisville Courier Journal
April 9, 2009

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller this past week filed lawsuits in five counties against as many foreclosure consultant companies that collect fees in exchange for promises to keep state residents in their homes. In doing so, he issued a statement that read: "Indiana has the tools in place that can help consumers avoid becoming victims of for-profit foreclosure consultants' bad intentions." The lawsuits claim violations of three laws: the Credit Services Organizations Act, the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act, and the Mortgage Rescue Protection Fraud Act. Indiana recorded one of the country's highest foreclosure rates in 2008.
