The Federal Housing Finance Agency reports that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac carried out almost 448,000 foreclosure prevention actions in 2013, including 99,700 in the last three months of the year.

The activity tips the total number of actions since 2008 -- when the firms were placed in conservatorship -- over 3.1 million. In all, more than 2.5 million Americans have avoided foreclosure through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac intervention, including nearly 1.6 million who were granted permanent mortgage modifications.
