Atlanta-based SunTrust Bank is partnering with the nonprofit Operation HOPE to launch a pilot program, called HOPE Inside, designed to reach underbanked consumers. SunTrust will place financial counselors in its branches to provide services such as credit-repair counseling, entrepreneurship training, and tax advice. It will launch the program this fall in Atlanta and Memphis before possibly expanding the initiative to more branches. The program is meant to help non-customers improve finances so that they can become traditional banking customers. SunTrust has pledged $1 million to fund the project, including training and compensation for the counselors.
