Scambook warns consumers about fraudulent Sallie Mae accounts on Instagram indicating that loan forgiveness is available due to the partial government shutdown. Borrowers should be aware that Sallie Mae has not been affected by the shutdown, does not have an Instagram account, and never requests personal information through social media. Borrowers who provide personal information through the illegitimate Instagram accounts increase their risk of identity theft and other online fraud.
