The government's latest Housing Scorecard reveals that 70 percent of non-GSE mortgages eligible for principal reductions through the Home Affordable Modification Programs actually did incorporate a principal reduction component in February. Workouts have enabled homeowners to reduce their median monthly payments by as much as $546. About 1.1 million homeowners have received a permanent loan modification since the program debuted in 2009. More than 107,000 second-lien workouts have been completed through the Second Lien Modification Program, with borrowers saving an estimated $155 per month. And homeowners whose second-lien obligations were extinguished altogether have seen their total monthly payments (including first liens) fall as much as 53 percent.
