July 3, 2012
A debt collection company based in Irvine, Calif., will cancel the debts of 124 West Virginia consumers and refund a total of $1.7 million under an agreement with state Attorney General Darrell McGraw. His office initially investigated a consumer's complaint that DP & Associates harassed the consumer's family members and falsely threatened arrest in telephone calls regarding an alleged debt. The company also will refund all monies collected, release any judgments it obtained against consumers, and close all West Virginia accounts with a zero balance. Additionally, credit reporting bureaus will be notified to delete references to the debts.
