Take Action
Although our regulators and policymakers may be well-schooled in financial issues, they are often unaware of the challenges faced by working families who must often juggle multiple financial obligations to keep up. A string of overdraft fees can set a family back for weeks or months, triggering a snowball effect of financial woes that disrupts their lives. Policymakers need to hear these stories so they know without a doubt what’s happening on the ground.

Rather than discouraging overdrafts, the system most banks and credit unions use creates more overdrafts—and more fees. The FAIR Overdraft Coverage Act, S 1799 in the U.S. Senate, and the Overdraft Protection Act of 2009, H.R. 3904 in the U.S. House, would significantly rein in these practices.
