CRL Pays Tribute to Dr. Dorothy Height

Statement from Michael Calhoun, President, Center for Responsible Lending

April 22, 2010

We mourn the passing of Dr. Dorothy I. Height, the former president of the National Council of Negro Women and a life-long advocate for racial and gender equality. As noted in the Washington Post, for decades Dr. Height was "a graceful and insistent voice" for voting rights, school desegregation, public accommodations and employment. She was known for her quiet strength and great courage in standing up for her beliefs, including her work as a civil rights activist when such work put her life in danger. Her death is a loss to all Americans, but we are grateful for her accomplishments and the inspiration she will continue to provide to new generations of advocates.
