The Oakland-based California office of the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) conducts research, communications, advocacy and outreach efforts to eliminate predatory lending in California, the most populous of the United States.

CRL is an affiliate of Self-Help, one of the nation’s largest community development financial institutions and a long-time lender to women, minority, rural, low-wealth borrowers. CRL has offices in Durham, N.C., where Self-Help is headquartered, and in Washington, D.C.

The California office primarily focuses on state-level mortgage and payday lending policy, and provides support to federal and national policy efforts in other areas of consumer finance, including overdraft lending, car title lending and credit cards. Through collaboration with our allies, media outreach, legislative advocacy, technical assistance to neighboring states and research and data analysis, we aim to influence legislative and regulatory policy agendas to better protect homeownership and family wealth in California and the West.

The California office is well-positioned to provide expert analysis, technical assistance and commentary to members of all branches of government, the media, foundations and academia on issues of sound lending practices and impacts of irresponsible lending and credit extension.
