The Organization
The Center for Responsible Lending was created in 2002 to protect homeownership and family wealth by working to eliminate predatory lending and other abusive financial practices. CRL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization that promotes responsible lending practices and access to fair terms of credit for low-wealth families. CRL's work has helped lead to major changes in lending practices, saving families over $2 billion annually. CRL has more than 45 employees and offices in Durham, NC; Oakland, CA; and in Washington, DC.

CRL is an affiliate of Self-Help, a community development lender founded in 1980 that creates and protects ownership opportunities for low-wealth families through home and small business ownership. It has provided over $4.5 billion dollars in financing to help over 50,000 low-wealth borrowers buy homes, build businesses and strengthen community resources.

Principal Responsibilities

The data analyst/SAS programmer will perform three primary research tasks: database design and management, statistical programming, and summarizing statistical research:

Database Design and Management: This position will be responsible for creating, merging, and maintaining a series of SAS datasets, and will involve collaboration with other CRL researchers to ensure databases are optimally designed to support both known and likely research designs.  Specific duties include researching secondary datasets, constructing new datasets as necessary, downloading and importing data, screening and cleaning data, creating new variables and data dictionaries, applying formats, and merging data with other primary and secondary datasets. These data management tasks require the writing of SAS data-step programs to manipulate data. In addition, the position requires contacting a variety of external organizations to inquire about the data and ensure the integrity of database construction. Primary data is proprietary and requires confidentiality. Secondary data sources may include (among others) the U.S. Bureau of Census' American Housing and America's Community Survey, the Survey of Consumer Finance, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and the national Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data files.

Statistical Programming: This position will be responsible for producing descriptive statistics on utilized datasets, and designing and implementing SAS code for analytic studies to fulfill internal and external client requests.

Research Summaries: This position will be responsible for organizing statistical results and summarizing results for the Center's research team and other CRL management.

Strong preference given to candidates with experience in financial services.

Extensive SAS knowledge and experience required. Prefer SAS certification, knowledge of SQL and macros, and experience with large-scale database management.

Excellent presentation and communication skills are necessary. Applicant must be flexible with demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed environment, as part of a team, and with a diverse group of people.
